The Benefits of Underwater Digital Cameras
By Jason Gluckman
Underwater digital cameras are fun and easy to use under the water and great above the water as well. Use your underwater digital camera in all kinds of weather, for many activities and in a variety of locations that could be either wet or wild.
Are underwater digital cameras better than the film underwater cameras? It's up to you to decide. The digital camera cannot run out of film. It has the ability to delete bad shots or change to a lower resolution if you need extra shots.
They have better (up to 4 times) depth of field. This is also great for wide-angle photography in low light conditions. Shooting with film at f4 would typically produce fuzzy backgrounds and edges. The same scene shot in digital will give you sharp photos
When using a strobe, most film cameras are limited to shutter speeds of 1/60th - 1/250th of a second. The new consumer digital cameras don't have mechanical shutters and will sync at speeds up to 1/800th of a second. Therefore, you can shoot in bright shallow water where high f-stops would make strobes ineffective. Higher shutter speed options allow you to keep your f-stop at a better setting. These high shutter speeds are also great for freezing light rays and fast action.
35mm zoom lenses don't do well underwater. They are bad at close-focus. The built-in lens in the new digital systems offer a large zoom range with minimum focus ability to 8 inches or less. So if you had a new digital camera and a high quality aspheric housing port, you could take a 100degree wide-angle shot and zoom into 1:3 macro shot without changing lenses. Who likes to change lenses all the time?
Underwater digital cameras are small and lightweight, and the quality is comparable to film if you go for the higher resolution shots. Scans and digital camera images require a small amount of sharpening in Adobe PhotoShop®. Just apply the ""unsharp mask"" filter for an instant improvement.
Underwater digital cameras are not perfect, however and like video, the cameras have a tough time with high contrast scenes. Also, it's fairly expensive to transfer your digital files to slides if you are interested in having your images presented in slide shows. However, most digital cameras allow you to plug directly into a television for image display. And there are digital projectors on the market that produce brilliant images and even professional presentations complete with audio tracks.
Unfortunately the underwater digital camera has not fixed the one worst digital camera problem: when you press the shutter release, the camera will not immediately take the picture. This shutter delay could be a problem--fish swim fast.
If you're just starting with underwater photography, it would probably be best to purchase a digital underwater camera instead of a film underwater camera. The instant feedback of digital imaging will take years off your learning curve. With the 5 megapixel cameras, print qualities are great.
Regardless of your photo experience, think about your goals with underwater imaging. Shooters looking for instant results, quick web posts and prints of 11 in. x 14 in. and smaller will be thrilled with digital. Digital is probably the best solution for all new shooters that are comfortable with computers. Instant feedback is always great.
If you are still not sure, however, try out the equipment before you buy it. Take a class with demo gear and instruction. Then buy something wonderful and go out and have a great time with your new digital underwater camera. wine cheese baskets
Wine - Cheese Secrets
The timeless combination of wine and cheese is always appreciated by almost
everyone who enjoys wine. A popular gift during the holiday season or at exclusive events is the wine and cheese basket. Selecting the right wine and cheese is as much a matter of personal preference as of the area from which they are produced.
A wine and cheese party can be a fun way to relax and make new friends. Make
it lots of fun by having every guest bring a bottle of wine and an exotic cheese.
Any season is appropriate for a cheese and wine party. Cheese, bread and wine
are all that is needed. A wine and cheese party can be a great way to get together with friends or for a special bridal or wedding shower, birthday party or other celebration.
Nothing can beat the taste of the cream and jam combined. Louis XVI’s last and dying wish was supposedly to have a final taste of Brie. Whether you are having a fancy wine and cheese party, or just enjoying a slice of cheese with an apple for a snack, your gourmet cheese will taste a lot better if you learn how to purchase, store and serve it properly.
Cheese, when served with wine, depicts impeccable taste and class. Its salty
flavor can be adjusted to suit the taste of the maker. And unlike most junk foods that are crunchy, cheese curds are moist and cool while having the same salty taste of your regular snacks. It should have a creamy taste, unique tang and a refreshing taste that will excite your taste buds.
Choose a specialty market or gourmet grocery store for the best selection of cheese, and remember, supermarkets do not always carry top quality cheeses. After you've bought your favorite cheese and brought it home, it's a good idea to remove it from the plastic wrap or plastic bag it was packaged in. Store it in a special glass container, made especially for cheese storage.
Two cheeses, Fromage des Pyrenées and Bleu d’Auvergne plus red wine, a Côtes du Rhône, labelled Landrillat is a great combination. Another good suggestion of wine to serve with any kind of Brie appetizer is a red Côte-du-Rhône, a red Bordeaux or Burgundy and it always goes well with a good quality Champagne.
Don't be afraid to taste new cheeses and try new wines. Only your taste buds will tell you what you need to know!

Customer Reviews - iLive Docking System and Boombox with Speakers for iPod and MP3 Players (Black)

Better than higher priced alternatives, May 9, 2007
By K.King
iLive Docking System and Boombox with Speakers for iPod and MP3 Players (Black)
I was looking for speakers and something to keep my iPod charged while I listened to it at work and saw this advertised at Kohl's. Checked Amazon and found it for less (and in black). Most iPod boomboxes get poor reception but this one does better than most I have seen. I have the iLuv iPod boombox for use at home but wanted something a little smaller for work. Radio gets suprisingly clear reception (usually a problem in offices) and the sound is good. Defintely not useful for a party but if you want something inexpensve, portable, with good sound and an AM/FM radio, this gets the job done. My only complaint is that the LED display can be hard to see at an angle, but that is a minor issue.

Customer Reviews - Advanced Maya Texturing and Lighting

Advanced Maya Texturing and Lighting (Paperback)
by Lee Lanier (Author)
Excellent for Professionals, August 12, 2007
By J. Mccann (Seattle)
This review is from: Advanced Maya Texturing and Lighting (Paperback)
I bought this manual to help me ugrade from Maya 7.0 to Maya 8.5 and it's become my most prized and relied upon resource. Every tutorial I've gone through has worked perfectly (no missing steps or errors so far), Mr. Lanier writes coherently & well, and each new topic is presented in a straightforward and matter-of-fact fashion.
As a professional Video Game Artist, I've reccommended this manual to our enitire company of 300, and will continue to do so to everyone else. In the past, decent documentation on the finer points of Maya has been elusive, but Mr. Lanier has saved us! I will be adding his other manuals to my library.

Customer Reviews - Domino: The Book of Decorating

Domino: The Book of Decorating: A room-by-room guide to creating a home that makes you happy (Hardcover)
by Deborah Needleman (Author), Sara Ruffin Costello (Author), Dara Caponigro (Author)
Brilliant!, October 3, 2008
By consumerifica (Boston, MA)
More often that not decorating books are just eye candy; after read them once you are satisfied but done. This is NOT the case with domino's first book. The domino team has managed to create a book that you will keep reading it again and again. It is simply brilliant!
Even though I have kept every issue of domino and go through them regularly, the book's format allows for a deeper approach to domino's mission. They have really worked hard to make the book into a usable tool. With more than just pretty pictures and stories, this book provides a framework for how to think about putting together a room (and yes their is new content).
I am only disappointed in two ways: 1, I wish the book referenced the issue each in which each room originally appeared and/or provided information about the products in each room. Perhaps there was not enough space, but access to information is one of my favorite parts of domino's monthly. 2, They also overlooked closets as room. And lets face it they have featured some stunning closets over the past few years.
Buy this book, you will NOT regret it!!!

Customer Reviews - Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder, 60-Minutes (Black)

Small Device With Big Memory! (UPDATE!), October 7, 2007
By Martin A Hogan "Marty From SF" (San Francisco, CA.)
A video camera the size of a box of cigarettes records up to 1 hour of your favorite 'instant' moments with an easy on/off button, minor zoom and shuttling between videos. Simply plug it into your PC, download the SETUP and you are on your way to editing your own home movies. This is a cool invention! And YES, the Record button does take a firm click - its not sensitive as you'll see (Press, press, press....)
Since you don't want to risk snapping the FLIP Camera USB port off on your computer, I recommend you buy the CABLES TO GO 26686 (male and female ends). It is six feet long and very convenient.
Also, I highly recommend buying a waterproof encasement for rainy or even very humid days. I fried my FLIP recently without any water (just humidity) getting into the flash drive.
Have fun!

Customer Reviews - Fashion Sketchbook (Spiral-bound)

the ONLY book you will ever need as a designer, this is the Bible of fashion illustration, May 20, 2007
By Hedera Femme (USA)
Fashion Sketchbook (Spiral-bound)
by Bina Abling (Author)
This review is from: Fashion Sketchbook (Spiral-bound)
This is The authority on illustrating for fashion. Abling's attention to detail and artistic ability make her a perfect tutor on the topic, and every explanation is clear--it's the sort of thing where you look at the example, and it clicks in your head, "Oh, Now I see!".
The book goes over Everything you need, but in case you want to know exactly what is inside, here is a quick summary:
Ch 1: Fashion Figure Proportions
Figures on grids broken down in several ways, extensive work on proportion. Abling divides figures into geometric shapes: foot, head, hips, chest, upper arm, thigh; she then puts them together, showing how they fit and relate to one anther. It then goes further and shows how different poses and types of movement affect the torso (upper and lower), as well as different types/shapes of figures, from the elongated fashion figure to petite and full. The chapter also features a figure map, interpretations of anatomy, different poses and artistic approaches, balance, and movement.
Ch 2: Basic Figure Forms
Drawing legs, arms, feet, shoes, hands, fingers, and foreshortening. There are so many helpful diagrams from multiple perspectives, numerous poses.
Ch 3: Model Drawing
Gesture drawing, exercises on isolated sections of the body, angles, and more; balance line, supporting leg (where the weight is distributed so the figure looks planted to the ground, not floating around or unevenly/awkwardly perched), arms.
Ch 4: Fashion Heads
Faces, different ethnicities, facial features, dissection of the head with a map on the placement of eyes, nose, lips, etc. The head in different positions, from different angles; techniques to maintain proportion and balance: diamond technique, working with angles and planes of the face, shading/highlights/shadows. Hair: styles, hairlines, period styles.
Ch 5: Drawing Men
Comparison to female figure, legs, arms, hands, hair, gesture, dressing the figure, suits, and details on how the fabric falls, where to put certain features like the cuff, armhole, etc. Proportions, classic menswear techniques, fashion croquis technique, vintage styles.
Ch 6: Drawing Children
Proportions by age, with many dissections and comparisons, tons of helpful illustrations and examples. Infants, toddlers, children, tweens; heads, facial expressions, hairstyles, arms, hands, legs, feet, vintage styles.
Ch 7: Garment and Garment Details
Necklines, collars, sleeves (different types, lengths, etc), skirts (folds, fall of fabric, gathering, flaring, volume, pleats), pants (folds, gathering, lengths, fit), blouses, blazers, jackets, coats, ruffles, smocking, shirring, cowls, fur, quilting, formal gowns, applying the concepts to garments.
Ch 8: Accessories
Jewelry and how they sit on the body, eyewear, hats (male, female), belts (types, fit), trims, notions, closures, handbags, shoes (different angles, heel heights, types).
Ch 9: Basic Rendering Techniques
Working with stripes and other fabric types/prints. Shading, highlighting, rendering with marker, fall fabrics, more fabric types: shiny fabrics, flat/matte, sheers, layers, velvet, satins, chiffon, etc. Working with all black fabrics.
Ch 10: Color Rendering
Chapter features color renderings to show skin tones, menswear with marker, children; using gouache, using watercolors, rendering hair in color.
Ch 11: Drawing Knits
Necklines, knit patterns, treatments/embellishments.
Ch 12: Designer Sketching and Fashion Illustration
Poses: I-pose, S-pose, X-pose, T-pose. Attitude, "look" and feel, style, emphasis.
Ch 13: Drawing Flats and Specs
Layout styles, freehand sketching, proportion, chart on measurements by size: Women, Men, Unisex, Belts, Hats, Socks. Gathering, buttons, closures, top stitching. Mixing croquis and flat drawings.
Ch 14: Layout
Combining multiple drawings, elements, or figures; groupings,
Appendix
More necklines, collars, sleeves, armholes, tops, dresses, skirts, pants, jackets, coats, sleepwear, underwear, design details, ties, hats, waistlines, pockets, handbags, shoes, collars, cuffs.
One of the neatest sections in the book is titled "problem spots" and features examples of the right and wrong way to do various details. Showing examples of how amateurs or beginners make mistakes and then showing the correct way works So well! Better than explanation, this simple and clear approach is crucial.
This book is filled with immensely helpful diagrams, exercises, and demonstrations. Every part of it is useful to students and designers, and because it is so comprehensive, this could be the single most important book in fashion illustration. If you could only have one book on the subject, get Fashion Sketchbook by Bina Abling.

Customer Reviews - Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, Book 4)

Wanted to love this book so much, August 4, 2008
By A. Jones "writemuch"
Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, Book 4) (Hardcover)
by Stephenie Meyer (Author)
I absolutely loved the first three books of the series. Read them all within a week of each other only a month ago.
This fourth was mind-blowing--and not in a good way, I'm afraid.
I didn't see the Cullen family portrayed as they had been in the first three; here, they were one-dimensional and under-utilized. I grieved because they were the reason I loved the first books.
Was the ending "happy?" I guess so, but it was unsatisfactory. There was no climax, just a rambling way to the happily-ever-after with little avenues here and there that made for a vaguely interesting journey.
There were some things I loved! Bella's waking up as a vampire and how she experienced it. I actually liked the birth scene--very dramatic. The first time she sees Jasper as a vampire. Liked Jacob's section--the chapter titles were inspired! Loved Jacob and Edward's relationship in the second section.
The baby. So Bad! {shudder here} But I could have lived even with little Renesmee if the book had made me feel something. I never for a second believed that anyone was in any real danger. Were we really supposed to believe that Alice and Jasper had abandonned them? I Never, for a split second, believed that. The hint that Alice left for Bella--so much more could have been done there! What happens to Leah?
Oh, there was so much that could have been done with this. . . but sadly, it wasn't.
Stephenie Meyer is an amazing, gifted, remarkable storyteller. This book doesn't come close to proving it. A very sad let-down.

Customer Reviews - Textbook of Medical Physiology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access

Review of Textbook of Medical Physiology, April 21, 2006
By Darrell Wu (Chicago, IL United States)
Textbook of Medical Physiology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Textbook of Medical Physiology) (Hardcover)
by Arthur C. Guyton (Author), John E. Hall (Author)
I agree with the reviewer from Israel, this book is exceptional at explaining physiology. During my first year in medical school I used Berne and Levy as the text for medical physiology and I found it to be a very good text. But reviewing physiology during my second year I used the text by Guyton and I couldn't believe how well written and clear it was. Both texts are excellent and I give both 5 stars, but I would definately recommend Guyton for a first read, and then Berne and Levy.
However, not all sections in this book, like not all sections in Berne and Levy are excellent. I recommend supplementing reading in Respiratory physiology by West or weinburg, Renal Physiology by rose or vander, and GI with Johnson. Cardio use B/L-it's the best. Endocrine, Guyton is good. Nerve and Muscle physiology use Berne and Levy; and Neurophysiology I highly recommend reading Neuroscience by Purves and Essentials of Neuroanatomy, Neurophysiology by Gilman.
